Fishing Boat Encounters Massive Shark Off the NJ Coast
On Saturday, a rare whale shark circled the boat that a group of fishermen were using to fish for tuna offshore.
A whale shark surfaced and circled the Jamaica, a 125-foot boat out of Brielle that was fishing for tuna near the Hudson Canyon.
The enormous whale shark can be seen swimming around the boat in the encounter's
video.
According to Capt. Erik Bogan, the boat anchored in the canyon approximately 5:30 p.m. on Friday, 97 miles from Manasquan Inlet, and remained there all night.
The whale shark appeared as the fishermen on board attempted to capture the tuna they could see using the boat's fishfinder.
According to him, the enormous shark cruised back and forth around the boat for around forty-five minutes.
According to
National Geographic, whale sharks may grow up to 40 feet in length, which is as long as a school bus, making them the largest fish species in the world.
According to the
Natural History Museum, the blue whale, which may grow up to 100 feet in length, is the only greater marine animal.
They are filter feeders and docile sharks, which means that instead of biting and assaulting their prey, they open their jaws wide and suck in their meal. The food, which includes phytoplankton, crab larvae, krill, and tiny fish, is subsequently filtered out by forcing the water out via their gills.
