Fishing Boat Sinks After Running Aground at Jersey Shore Beach
A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson stated on Sunday that the 77-foot commercial fishing boat that came aground last week in Point Pleasant Beach, three blocks from the Manasquan Inlet, sank while it was being moved out of the vicinity.
Shortly before five a.m. on Friday, the Coast Guard was notified that the boat had beached. On Saturday, crews labored nonstop to get the boat underway.
According to the Asbury Park Press, around two in the morning on Sunday, the ship sank in 48 feet of water around half a mile from Manasquan Inlet while being towed away by a salvage business, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Matthew West.
When it sank, nobody was on board.
The Coast Guard placed a buoy next to the submerged wreckage and alerted seafarers about the underwater hazard. According to West, "it's not affecting traffic into the inlet."
Although one boat did become snagged in fishing line from the Susan Rose, the Coast Guard helped it free itself so it could continue.
According to West, the Susan Rose was emptied of its oil and gas before being relocated.
When the ship ran aground early on Friday, emergency medical personnel and firefighters were able to save three persons from it. There was already a fourth person off the boat.
West stated that the reason the boat ran aground is being looked into and that the salvage business is devising a strategy to get the boat out of the sea.
