Flooding at the Jersey Shore

Weather in Toms River

A winter storm is approaching. According to the National Weather Service, some regions of the state may get snow and ice on Sunday, while others will have wind and rain.

According to a meteorological briefing from the National Weather Service on Saturday, the current cold snap, along with rain and snow overnight Sunday, might make travel difficult for Monday morning.

According to the NWS, 3 to 5 inches of snow and 0.4 inches of ice were expected in the northern portion of the state Sunday evening, overnight, and into Monday morning. Sussex County was under a snow storm watch from Sunday evening through Monday am.

The NWS predicted flooding all along the Jersey Shore — minor flooding further south, but "moderate flooding possible on the northern NJ coast." Winds are likely to blow between 20 and 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

According to the summary, "minor tree and line damage will be likely for coastal sites Sunday night as wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are forecast."

As of Saturday morning, a coastal flood watch was in effect for the state's shoreline counties from Monmouth north. Residents in some Jersey Shore municipalities have been advised to take measures as the weekend approaches.

Mayor Carmen Amato of Berkeley reminded residents not to park on roads to allow for salting, sanding, and possible plowing, and offered residents parking at the township's recreation building on Route 9 or Central Regional Middle School for those who needed to get their cars out of low-lying areas of town.

Flooding is expected "on the most vulnerable routes in coastal and bayside areas, as well as along interior tidal waterways," according to email notifications from Asbury Park and Neptune Township.
