Get Ready to Fall Back: NJ Clocks Change This Weekend

NEW JERSEY — It’s almost time to turn the clocks back.

Daylight Saving Time officially comes to an end this weekend, meaning residents across New Jersey will gain an extra hour overnight as the state returns to standard time.

When Do We Fall Back?

The time change takes place at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026. At that moment, clocks will move back one hour to 1 a.m.

For many people, the easiest way to prepare is to turn manual clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night, October 31.

Most smartphones, computers and other internet-connected devices will make the adjustment automatically.

Will We Get an Extra Hour of Sleep?

Technically, yes. Because the clock moves backward, the overnight period gains an additional hour.

The change can also affect sleep schedules, particularly for children and people who maintain consistent daily routines.

What Happens to Sunrise and Sunset?

The biggest noticeable change will come in the evening.

Once New Jersey returns to standard time, sunrise and sunset will occur about an hour earlier by the clock. That means it will begin getting dark much earlier in the afternoon and evening.

For example, recent estimates put sunset in Jersey City at about 4:55 p.m. on Sunday, highlighting just how quickly evenings will become darker following the time change.

The earlier darkness is also an important reminder for drivers and pedestrians. November brings increased activity from deer around sunrise and sunset, creating additional hazards on New Jersey roads.

When Will We Spring Forward Again?

The next clock change will happen in March 2027, when Daylight Saving Time returns and clocks move ahead one hour. In the meantime, New Jersey will remain on standard time through the winter months.

So, before heading to bed Saturday night, remember:

Spring forward. Fall back.

And this weekend, New Jersey will officially fall back one hour.
