Heroic NJ Coast Guardsman from Ocean County Receives National Recognition for Motorcycle Rescue

A true hero from Ocean County is being honored.

U.S. Coast Guard Yeoman Second Class Cody Dmochowski, a Brick native stationed at Training Center Cape May, is being recognized on a national stage as the 2026 USO Coast Guardsman of the Year.

This prestigious honor places him among just seven service members nationwide selected by the USO for extraordinary acts of courage and commitment. He will be honored at the organization’s annual gala on April 16 in Washington, D.C.

Dmochowski earned this recognition after stepping in during a critical moment while off duty. After coming upon a serious motorcycle crash, he navigated difficult terrain to locate the injured victim, who had been thrown into a wooded area and was suffering from a compound fracture and significant blood loss.

He immediately provided emergency care, relayed critical information to dispatchers, and—recognizing the potential for spinal injuries—carefully stabilized the victim. He remained on scene for over an hour, assisting until first responders arrived and even helping with the investigation. He later traveled to the hospital to check on the victim and has continued to provide unwavering support to both the victim and their family.

Officials say his immediate, decisive, and heroic actions were instrumental in saving the victim’s life.

Beyond this lifesaving act, Dmochowski serves as a Company Commander at Training Center Cape May—one of only 56 Coast Guard specialists entrusted with transforming civilians into military members. He develops recruits with discipline, trust, and integrity, all while upholding the highest standards of conduct and professionalism. His leadership has been especially vital as the Coast Guard has seen a 25% increase in recruit throughput without an increase in Company Commanders.

Through his courage, dedication, and exceptional leadership, Dmochowski embodies the very best of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Ocean County is proud 👏
