This winter, a gastrointestinal ailment is circulating that is primarily affecting South Jersey.

Physicians have noticed a sharp rise in viral gastroenteritis, also known as the "stomach bug."

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has observed a concerning rise in stomach viruses prevalent in our region, according to reporting from 6 ABC.

One of the most important things to watch out for with chronic disorders, according to doctors, is dehydration.

The Northeast region of the country has seen a 15.4% surge in norovirus cases in recent days, raising concerns among local physicians. Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach illness.

"Even a single norovirus particle can cause illness," Dr. Alfred Sacchetti of Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital told 6 ABC. "It's incredibly contagious."

How to Prevent Norovirus
  • Wash your hands often
  • Rinse fruits and vegetables
  • Cook shellfish thoroughly
  • Stay home when sick and for two days after symptoms stop
  • Avoid preparing food for others when sick and for two days after symptoms stop

It is possible to experience diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach discomfort, fever, and body aches. Dehydration may result from this, particularly in young children.

For a bit longer, you will also need to exercise caution when it comes to the norovirus. According to the CDC, last winter's cases and outbreaks peaked in March and continued to rise well into the late spring.
