Next month, Island Beach State Park will Collect Christmas Trees to Help Restore its Dunes
Visitors Must Register in Advance this Year
People will be permitted to utilize their Christmas trees after the holidays at Island Beach State Park.
Throughout the park, Christmas trees will be set up at the base of eroding dunes. Wind-blown sand is captured by the trees, allowing it to build into a dune faster than it would otherwise.
The park's Christmas tree collection on Jan. 8 will be the park's second annual event, albeit this year visitors must register in advance before dropping off their tree. Island Beach will not take any more trees once 300 contributors have signed up.
According to the State Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson, "pre-registration allows Island Beach State Park and its volunteers to efficiently receive and control the number of trees at the designated drop-off points.
Island Beach State Park intended to get 200 trees for its first collection in January 2020, in order to repair its dune system. More than 2,000 people visited the park.
Trees must be dropped off at the park's swimming area #2 on Jan. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for those who register. Lights and ornaments should be removed from trees. There will be no flocked trees accepted.
Trees will be loaded straight into trucks and transported to the beach. The offloading operation will be aided by staff on site.
