As the omicron variant of the coronavirus spreads across the country, health experts say booster shots, which are available at pharmacies and clinics in Toms River, are the best defense against COVID-19 diseases.
According to the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, occurrences of the omicron variant – infections among the vaccinated — are less likely among those who have gotten their third vaccine dose.
All but a few states, including New Jersey, have discovered the omicron strain, which was originally reported in South Africa on Nov. 24.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's senior infectious disease specialist, said Friday that booster doses from Pfizer and Moderna are effective against the omicron form and that a separate vaccination is not required.
The omicron variation is expected to become the dominant coronavirus strain in the next weeks, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It presently accounts for 3% of all new infections.
Public health officials are concerned that current vaccination rates are insufficient to ward off a fifth wave of the coronavirus. Only 61 percent of eligible Americans are fully vaccinated, and only 28% have received booster shots. COVID-19 instances and hospitalizations are on the rise, with approximately 120,000 new cases and 1,200 fatalities recorded per day, primarily due to the delta form.
Pfizer and Moderna booster doses, according to the CDC, both provide greater protection against COVID-19 and help prevent severe symptoms in situations of breakthrough infection.
