According to a Lakewood official, a Lakewood police officer received a concussion and a fracture in an accident on Route 88 on Thursday morning.

The officer was on duty when the tragedy happened, according to Lakewood Mayor Raymond Coles. He didn't know anything else about the collision and didn't know the officer's identity. It's not clear if anyone else was hurt.

"He was treated and released, and he is recovering at home," Coles added. According to him, the accident is still being investigated. The collision occurred outside the entrance to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, between Fort and Edge streets, shortly before 8 a.m. For several hours, Route 88 was closed.
