According to the Manchester Police Department, Officers from the Manchester Township Police Department responded to 1001 State Highway 70, the Shop Rite shopping mall, at about 8:54 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, to investigate a crash involving a car striking a pedestrian in the parking lot.

Officers arrived to find a silver 2020 Chevrolet Trax partially parked in the center of the parking lot aisle and an elderly woman lying on the ground. The Chevrolet was pulling forward, out of the parking place, and turning left, according to the inquiry. The pedestrian was walking towards the Shop Rite and into the Chevrolet's path of travel as the vehicle was pulling forward. The front driver's side of the vehicle collided with the pedestrian at this point.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Peter Stasinski, 82, and his front-seat passenger, Virginia Stasinski, 80, both of Whiting, were unharmed in the collision. Marie Ryerson, 87, of Whiting, was hit by a car and suffered injuries to the right side of her body, as well as potentially serious internal damage. Mrs. Ryerson was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Hospital by ambulance after being injured in the crash by the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Service. Her status is currently categorized as critical but stable.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, but at this point, driver error appears to be the primary contributing factor. Assisting at the scene were EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services. The crash is being investigated by Patrolman Michael O’Hara of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
