TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River community is mourning the loss of John J. Pereira, a beloved local business owner, devoted family man, and proud U.S. Army veteran, who passed away on July 6, 2026, at the age of 80, following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

To everyone who knew him, John was the kind of person who made life brighter. His quick wit, warm personality, and unmistakable sense of humor filled every room he entered. But above all else, John’s greatest joy was the family he built with his beloved wife, Angela. He was a proud father to his daughter Christine, and an adoring grandfather to Carina and Gia, who brought him endless happiness. He is also survived by his son‑in‑law, Jason.

John served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a chapter of his life he carried with quiet pride.

Locally, John was best known as the longtime owner of FastBreak in Toms River, where he became a familiar face and a trusted friend to countless customers. Before that, he owned Mr. J’s Deli in Cranford, a place where he built friendships that lasted decades. No matter where he went, someone always seemed to recognize him — a testament to the many lives he touched simply by being himself.

John loved conversation. Whether sharing stories, making people laugh, or reminiscing with old friends, he had a gift for turning everyday moments into lasting memories. His generosity, humor, and ability to connect with anyone will be remembered forever.

He also cherished time on the water, boating, and traveling to warm destinations. Naples, Florida, held a special place in his heart, and he treasured every moment spent at his second home there with family and friends.

John’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and community — a life defined not by accomplishments, but by the people he uplifted along the way.
