Man Charged with Hit-and-Run Death in Ocean County Tragedy

Investigation Underway Following Deadly Pedestrian Strike in Ocean County
According to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, on June 1, 2026, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Officers from the Jackson Township Police Department responded to the area of South Hope Chapel Road for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Responding Officers discovered a male in the roadway with significant head injuries. Although emergency personnel responded to the area to render aid, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
An investigation revealed that a Mack dump truck was traveling northbound on South Hope Chapel Road. The operator of the dump truck attempted to avoid what he believed to be debris in the roadway; he then realized that it was, in fact, a body, and despite efforts to the contrary, traveled over the male.
The operator of the truck stopped immediately and reported the incident to law enforcement. A post-collision examination of the truck revealed no evidence of a direct pedestrian strike to the front of the vehicle. Rather, the physical evidence was consistent with the truck having run over the body already laying in the roadway and dragging him a short distance.
The crash remains under investigation.
