SEASIDE PARK, NJ – New Jersey surf anglers will see significant changes to the Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle Permit program at Island Beach State Park beginning in 2027, including one of the most requested updates from the fishing community: the end of permit sellouts.

According to park officials, an unlimited number of Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle Permits will be available for purchase throughout the 2027 season. The move comes in response to feedback from permit holders and the saltwater fishing community who have long expressed concerns about permits selling out before everyone had a chance to purchase one.
The new system will allow anglers to buy permits when needed without worrying about annual permit caps.
All 2027 Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle Permits will go on sale online beginning December 15, 2026. While purchases will be completed online, anglers will still be required to pick up permits in person at Island Beach State Park.
Officials said additional details about the purchasing process will be released ahead of the December on-sale date.
While permits will no longer be capped, daily beach access will continue to be managed based on capacity.
Permit holders will be allowed onto designated fishing areas until the beach reaches its operational limit. Once capacity is reached, additional vehicles will not be permitted to enter until space becomes available.
Park officials noted that capacity levels may change depending on weather conditions, beach conditions, public safety concerns and operational needs.
During busy summer weekends and holidays, New Jersey State Parks may also implement a reservation-based system if necessary to manage visitation and protect natural resources.
Anglers must possess a valid New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry before purchasing a permit. The registry is free and must be completed prior to permit purchase.
Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle Permits authorize eligible 4×4 and AWD passenger vehicles to access designated beach areas strictly for fishing activities.
Permit holders must carry required safety and recovery equipment, comply with all posted regulations and speed limits, and ensure that everyone age 12 and older in the vehicle is actively engaged in fishing while on the beach.
Provides seven-day-a-week access throughout the entire 2027 calendar year.
Provides seven-day-a-week access from January 1 through mid-May and October 1 through December 31.
From mid-May through October 1, access is limited to weekdays only, from 7 a.m. Monday through 8 p.m. Friday, excluding holidays.
The elimination of permit limits represents one of the biggest changes to the Island Beach State Park Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle Permit program in years. For many New Jersey surf fishermen, the update means less stress during permit season and greater flexibility throughout the year while continuing to balance public access, environmental protection and beach capacity management.
Additional information about the 2027 permit program is expected to be released by New Jersey State Parks in December.
