Watch Video of Jack Ciattarelli Speaking to New Jersey
There are still tens of thousands of vote by mail and provisional ballots yet to be counted.
Republican gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli asked supporters to be patient and not fall prey to online conspiracy theories, despite the fact that the results suggest he is losing in the closest election in New Jersey in a quarter-century.
Ciattarelli also slammed Gov. Phil Murphy's victory speech last night, calling it premature because it was delivered practically immediately after the Associated Press projected Murphy had won re-election. Murphy currently leads Ciattarelli by more than 44,000 votes, or nearly 1.8 percent, in polls that previously showed Ciattarelli ahead.
Votes Still Need To Be Counted
According to Ciattarelli, no one should be declaring victory or conceding the election until every legal vote is counted.
Ciattarelli stated that his campaign is keeping a close eye on the vote-counting process in the 21 counties. Vote-by-mail ballots received by Monday will be counted if they were postmarked by Tuesday, and counties will begin examining and counting qualifying provisional ballots on Tuesday.
Ciattarelli stated, "We're going to enable the 21 counties to continue counting every valid vote-by-mail and provisional ballot." "That may take another week or two, and compliance people are keeping an eye on it." Any decision on a recount or audit, if necessary, shall be made at the end of the counting process, not earlier."
“I don’t want people falling victim to wild conspiracy theories or online rumors,” he said. “While consideration is paid to any and all credible reports, please don’t believe everything you see or read online.”
Voters in videos published on Twitter appear to be having difficulty voting for Ciattarelli, apparently using their fingers instead of the stylus provided to ensure the touchscreen replied. Some people were outraged because Ciattarelli led in the in-person vote in Bergen County, but Murphy took the lead after vote-by-mail results were added late at night.
“Listen, I know how passionate people are about this election and the future of our state. I am, too,” Ciattarelli said. “That’s why I worked so very hard the past 22 months to win this election and get New Jersey on a different path forward. Right now, what’s most important is for everyone to be patient and let the process play out.
“Know this: My team is comprised of some of the best legal and political experts in the country,” he said. “I promise you, whatever the outcome, the election result will be legal and fair. You have my word. Hopefully we’ll be fixing New Jersey together.”
