Lakewood Man in Wheelchair Killed Crossing Route 9

Man in wheelchair killed while crossing Route 9 in Lakewood, NJ

A resident of Lakewood Township, Frederick Gillette, 58, was struck by a 2003 GMC Yukon about 12:30 a.m. at the intersection with John Street in Lakewood, NJ on Friday, July 23, 2021.

According to police, Mr. Gillette was riding his motorized wheelchair and was struck and killed. He suffered significant traumatic injuries resulting in his unfortunate death. He was thrown 20 feet while crossing Route 9.

The person who struck him is a 47-year-old Lakewood man and remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to Lakewood Police Department spokesman Gregory Staffordsmith.
