According to Toms River Police Department, at 1:55 PM on September 14, 2022, police units were sent to Ortley Beach's Fielder Avenue and Ocean Avenue in response to a complaint of a swimmer in trouble.
Seaside Heights Beach Patrol arrived on the scene with jet skis to reach the distressed swimmer and transported Middletown resident Matthew Mauro, 46, to the shore where CPR was started right away.
Officers from Toms River, Seaside Heights Beach and Fire units, Tri-Boro First Aid, TRPD CSOs, and RWJ Paramedics all contributed to Mr. Mauro's resuscitation. He was brought to Community Medical Center, where he was later was pronounced dead.The incident remains under investigation.
