Bayville Man Pleads Guilty to Carjacking

John Bailey, 35, of Bayville

On June 1, 2022, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that John Bailey, 35, of Bayville, pled guilty to carjacking in connection with an event that occurred in Lakewood Township on December 5, 2018. The State will request a sentence of 25 years in New Jersey State Prison during Bailey's sentencing on August 12, 2022.

Officers from the Lakewood Township Police Department were dispatched to the vicinity of Hearth Court on December 5, 2018, for a report of a carjacking. Officers on the scene determined that a 20-year-old woman was sitting in her car outside her home when an unknown person approached her and requested for directions and a ride. The girl directed the man but refused to offer him a ride.

The male returned to the vehicle a short time later, pounded on the window, and smashed the glass. The man then got into the vehicle, sat down next to the female victim, and started choking her. The male then drove away with the victim stuck inside the vehicle, threatening to kill her if she did not remain silent. The victim was eventually able to open the vehicle's passenger side door and get out while it was still moving. The victim bolted for a nearby residence, and the cops were dispatched.

The woman was taken to the Southern Campus of Monmouth Medical Center in Lakewood for treatment of several injuries, including a bite mark on her leg, a laceration on her head, and cuts to her neck. The victim's vehicle was discovered abandoned in Jackson Township later that day, with blood stains on the rear driver's side door and quarter panel.

The DNA profile collected from the blood spot on the vehicle was a probable match to John Bailey, according to the New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences on June 5, 2020. A court-ordered buccal swab was taken from John Bailey on October 13, 2020, and the DNA profiles obtained from the blood stain and bite mark on the victim's leg were compared. The DNA identified in the victim's bite mark and the blood stain in her vehicle was validated by the New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences on January 4, 2021.

Bailey was charged with carjacking on a warrant on January 5, 2021, and was added to the National Crime Information Center database as a wanted person. Bailey was caught in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, on January 26, 2021, by members of the Ocean County Sheriff's Office/United States Marshals Service Task Force. Bailey was arrested and taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he has been since his arrest.
