One of 43 teachers nationwide to earn the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence is Christine Girtain, the 2022–23 New Jersey Teacher of the Year.

The NEA Foundation announced the winners of the award, which honors educators "for their leadership, excellence in the classroom, family and community engagement, commitment to equity and diversity, and advocacy for the teaching profession," noting that the honorees were chosen from among those submitted by the NEA's state affiliates.

On May 3, 2024, at The Anthem in Washington, DC, Girtain and the other 2024 educator honorees will be recognized at the NEA Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education.

Five of the recipients will each get $10,000 and be chosen as finalists for the top national prize. At the NEA Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education, the educator chosen for the top honor will be announced and awarded $25,000 in prize money.
