New Jersey Braces For Dangerous Heat As Feels-Like Temps Near 110°

New Jersey is bracing for one of the hottest stretches of weather so far this year, with forecasters warning that temperatures and humidity could combine to create dangerous heat conditions across much of the state.

A prolonged heat event is expected to intensify beginning Wednesday and continue through the holiday week, prompting Extreme Heat Warnings and Watches for parts of New Jersey. While actual air temperatures are forecast to climb into the upper 90s and near 100 degrees in some locations, the heat index — what it feels like outside when humidity is added — could soar between 100 and 110 degrees.

Forecasters say the hottest conditions are expected Thursday and Friday, when some areas could approach or exceed 105 degrees on the heat index scale. Overnight temperatures may remain stuck in the 70s and low 80s, limiting relief and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The extreme heat warning covers portions of central and eastern New Jersey, including areas where prolonged exposure outdoors could quickly become dangerous. Meteorologists warn that several consecutive days of intense heat can create elevated risks for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and anyone without access to air conditioning.

Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, wearing lightweight clothing, and checking on neighbors and relatives. Residents are also urged never to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

While isolated thunderstorms could occasionally develop and provide brief relief, forecasters say the overall pattern favors continued dangerous heat into the holiday period before conditions gradually ease. Stay up-to-date with the latest forecast.
