New Jersey Rattled by Earthquake
Parts of Hunterdon County were shaken by an earthquake on Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The USGS map shows that around 3 p.m., the center of the magnitude 2.2 earthquake was 2.5 miles north-northeast of Whitehouse Station, just off Oldwick Road. Numerous reports regarding the impact came from Ringoes, Pittstown, Hampton, Glen Gardner, Clinton, Annandale, and Lebanon.
According to the survey, the most recent earthquake to strike New Jersey was a 1.7-magnitude one that happened in August 2022 close to the Lake Telemark area of Roxbury Township in Morris County.
The Jersey Shore has also seen earthquakes: a 2.1-magnitude event at Marlboro in September 2020; a 2.2-magnitude event at Tuckerton in June 2021; and a 1.4-magnitude event that transpired close to Keansburg in August 2017.
A magnitude 3.8 earthquake that occurred close to Freehold on January 30, 1979, was one of the Jersey Shore's biggest ever recorded.
