NJ Weather Update: Friday Storms Bring Damaging Winds

Before a storm that is expected to bring heavy rain, thunder, and maybe flooding to the area, forecasters stated that parts of the Garden State are already being battered by winds exceeding fifty miles per hour.

The National Weather Service predicts that New Jersey could have between half an inch and an inch of rain through Friday afternoon, which could lead to flooding in areas of the state where the ground is already saturated from Thursday's storm.

The National Weather Service Mount Holly station posted on X (previously Twitter) Friday morning, saying, "We're not quite done yet." "This morning, there will be more showers with locally heavy rain and maybe a rumbling of thunder before a dry afternoon settles in. With temperatures primarily in the 60s, it will be windy at times but not quite as much as it was last night.

The Jersey Shore is expected to endure strong winds for the foreseeable future; early on Friday morning, wind gusts above 50 mph were already being reported in North Beach Haven and Wildwood. Winds exceeding 40 mph were recorded in several areas of Ocean and Cape May counties, as well as in Burlington, Cumberland, Mercer, Monmouth, and Sussex.

In general, flooding is anticipated in the back bays where water is still stored. For the next two high tide cycles, some flooding is anticipated around northern Barnegat Bay, particularly in tidal sites close to Mantoloking and Bayshore, according to the weather service.

"A large portion of Barnegat Bay's southern end and the oceanfront are not expected to experience tidal flooding."

Forecasters indicated that the clouds should clear in time for the weekend, with daytime highs close to 60 degrees and the possibility of partly sunny skies.
