Robert M. Cohan, 35, of Lakehurst
According to Toms River police, a Lakehurst man is accused of taking deposits from many homeowners in Toms River for home repair work that was never completed.
According to Jillian Messina, a public relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department, Robert Cohan, 35, of Lakehurst, has been charged with multiple charges of being an unlicensed home improvement contractor as well as second-degree theft by deceit. She indicated that other charges are still pending.
According to Messina, Cohan began approaching Garden of Pleasant Plains residents in February to perform driveway, sidewalk, roof, and other property repair work.
Mr. Cohan ran a home improvement contracting plan that was aimed at the Gardens of Pleasant Plains residents from February through May. He solicited the locals for driveway, sidewalk, roof, door, and other home repairs, and has so far amassed more than $150,000 from his victims.
When Mr. Cohan returned to collect further funds after collecting an initial payment, he would never finish the promised service. In the plan, he was falsely utilizing the name of the construction company owned by his family.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office authorized the filing of criminal charges for 2nd Degree Theft by Deception. The Ocean County Jail is where Mr. Cohan is being held while waiting for a detention hearing after being remanded. There are additional charges as well.
