Ocean County Gas Stations Fined After Pricing Violations

Ocean County Gas Station Fined After Pricing Violations

The owner of three Ocean County gas stations has agreed to pay a $17,500 fine following an investigation that found customers were being charged gasoline prices that differed from those displayed on the stations’ digital signs, according to the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs.

Rajinder Chandi, who owns the three stations, also agreed to take several steps to ensure the prices shown on the pumps accurately reflect the amount customers are charged, county officials said.

The stations involved are Delta at 245 Route 37 in Toms River, Delta/G&R at 200 Route 37 in Lakehurst, and Sunoco at 644 Route 37 West in Toms River.

The investigation began after the State Office of Weights & Measures referred complaints involving two Route 37 gas stations in Toms River, according to Ronald Heinzman, director of the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs.

The third complaint was brought to the county’s attention by Lakehurst police, Heinzman said.
The county’s Division of Weights and Measures and Office of Consumer Protection uncovered “numerous violations of state Weights & Measures laws” as well as what officials described as a pattern of deceptive business practices, according to Ocean County Commissioner Robert S. Arace, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs. Chandi and his attorneys reached a settlement with the county to resolve pending municipal court complaints in Toms River and Lakehurst, officials said. Under the binding consent agreement, in addition to paying the $17,500 fine, Chandi is required to:

Make sure all digital gas pump displays accurately reflect the actual per-gallon prices charged to customers. Use only certified vendors licensed by the New Jersey State Office of Weights & Measures for future pump repairs. Provide documentation of all repairs to the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs’ Weights & Measures Office within 10 days after the work is completed.

Attend a future verification meeting to demonstrate that all outstanding violations have been corrected.

Continue complying with all applicable Consumer Affairs and Weights & Measures laws.
