Roberto Alcazar-Sanchez, 27, of Jackson
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office stated that a Jackson man has pled guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal Christmas Eve crash in 2020.
Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said Roberto Alcazar-Sanchez, 27, pleaded guilty to one count of knowingly leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision before Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan on Thursday. Billhimer said the state will seek a sentence of seven years in jail when he is sentenced on April 22.
Officers from the Jackson Township Police Department were dispatched to the vicinity of Cedar Swap Road and I-195 on December 24, 2020, at about 6:00 p.m., for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving serious injuries.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Vehicular Homicide Unit and the Jackson Township Police Department found that Norman Shtab, 83, of Howell Township, was driving a 2010 Mercedes Benz when he exited I-195 at Exit 21. Phyllis Shtab, 81, of Howell, was a passenger in the vehicle with him. Mr. Shtab's car collided with a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado as he attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Cedar Swap Road.
Following the crash, Mr. and Mrs. Shtab were taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune Township. Mr. Shtab was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries before being released. Mrs. Shtab died on December 26, 2020, from the injuries she incurred in the crash, and was pronounced dead at Jersey Shore Medical Center on that date.
A warrant was issued on December 30, 2020, for the arrest of the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, identified as Alcazar-Sanchez through ongoing investigation, who fled the scene of the December 24, 2020 incident on foot. Alcazar-Sanchez subsequently abandoned the United States and flew to Mexico, according to further inquiry.
Alcazar-Sanchez surrendered to US Customs and Border Patrol Protection Agents in Laredo, Texas, on March 3, 2021. He was eventually extradited back to Ocean County, where he has been held in the Ocean County Jail since March 31, 2021.
Prosecutor Billhimer acknowledges the diligent efforts of Senior Assistant Prosecutor Jamie Schron and Assistant Prosecutor Alyssa Mandara who handled the case on behalf of the State, and commends the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Victim Witness Advocacy Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, Jackson Township Police Department Detective Bureau, Jackson Township Police Department Special Emergency Response Team, Brick Township Police Department, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Field Services Unit/Warrants, United States Customs and Border Protection, Laredo Texas Police Department, and the United States Marshals Service, for their collaborative efforts and assistance relative to this investigation ultimately leading to Alcazar-Sanchez’s arrest, guilty plea, and soon his state prison sentence.
