NJ State Assemblyman Ronald Dancer Dies at Age 73

NJ State Assemblyman Ronald Dancer Served Ocean County Residents

After a long illness, a state legislator from Ocean County who spent nearly 20 years in the General Assembly passed away.

Over three decades, Ron Dancer worked in government. The Republican was Mayor of Plumsted from 1990 to 2011, and from 2002 until his passing, he was an Assemblyman for the state's 12th Legislative District which represents parts of Burlington, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties. This includes Allentown, Chesterfield, Englishtown, Jackson, Manalapan, Matawan, Millstone (Monmouth), New Hanover, North Hanover, Old Bridge, Plumsted, Roosevelt, Upper Freehold and Wrightstown

On social media, governor Phil Murphy said that state flags would be flown at half-staff "in his honor and memory."

Dancer was recalled as a devoted public servant by his colleagues in the Legislature on both sides of the aisle. Sen. Jon Bramnick, a Republican representing Morris, Somerset and Union counties, said in a statement, "(Dancer) was truly a man of integrity, civility, and love for everyone. Ron Dancer should be a model for all elected officials. I would only hope that people will learn from this great man."

Dancer served on the township's planning board from 1983 to 2019 in addition to serving as Plumsted's mayor from 1990 to 2011. Additionally, he has held positions in Ocean County's Human Services Advisory Council, Senior Citizens Advisory Board, Natural Lands Trust Fund Advisory Committee, and Board of Social Services.

Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, a Democrat from Middlesex, said, "His departure will undoubtedly be felt by all of us in the Assembly and by the residents of Ocean County he proudly represented."

To fill Dancer's remaining year and a half of the term, the Republican Party in his district will now be responsible for choosing a successor.
