Powerful Storm to Blast NJ with Fierce Rain, High Winds and Widespread Flooding

The worst rain is expected Tuesday night, but it will start to rain on Tuesday afternoon. A statewide flood watch has been issued by the National Weather Service, and it goes into force this Tuesday afternoon.

This is likely to be quite an impactful event with significant flooding possible...both freshwater flooding due to heavy rains and coastal flooding due to very strong south/southeast winds late day Tuesday and Tuesday night. Along the coast winds could gust to over 60 mph! Gusts inland will likely be at least 40 to 50 mph. This could lead to numerous power outages.

From Tuesday evening until late Tuesday night, Cape May, Monmouth, Ocean, Cumberland, Atlantic, and southeast Burlington are under a high wind watch, with winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts as high as 60 to 65 mph. The National Weather Service warned that significant power disruptions could result from the strong winds' potential to bring down power wires and trees.

Sporadic mild flooding is predicted in Atlantic and Cape May counties, while minor flooding is forecast along the Raritan Bay and along the ocean in Monmouth and Ocean counties. The weather service predicts significant flooding starting in Trenton and moving south of the state capital down the Delaware River.

Wednesday morning could see less rain, but the day will still be quite windy with gusts reaching 40 mph.

Forecasters say another potentially strong storm during the second half of Friday and on Saturday should deliver more rain to New Jersey. Northwest parts of the state might see a wintry mix at the outset before it turns to rain. Check for weather updates.
