Remembering Sondra Fortunato of Toms River

Everyone will remember Sondra Fortunato, also referred to as Miss Liberty by many.

Her spouse, family, and friends attended her funeral service on February 9 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Toms River. They remembered her vibrant spirit and radiant smile.

Speaking during the service, the priest praised Fortunato for her vivacious, amiable demeanor as well as the brightness she gave to social gatherings, athletic competitions, and fundraising efforts.

Many called Fortunato "Miss Liberty," and she was larger than life. Her cancer-related complications claimed her life on January 11.

She was devastated to learn last year that she had Stage 4 cancer, which had destroyed her left eye and ultimately taken her life at the age of 75.

A memorial to Fortunato is located at the Toms River Library on Washington Street, not far from the location of her funeral. There's a display case in the Wheeler Room on the second level of the library with a variety of pictures and newspaper clippings highlighting her experiences.

Sondra Fortunato's Toms River residence had a sign outside that read "Miss Liberty."

She will be remembered for her incredible enthusiasm and her passion for her community in addition to her beauty.
