Rita’s Cancels FREE Water Ice on the 1st Day of Spring 2021
The First Day of Spring this year will not be marked by long lines of people and little cups of free Rita’s Italian Ice.
The company announced Tuesday it was canceling this year’s First Day of Spring Free Italian Ice Giveaway, scheduled for March 20. The event, started in 1992, gives away more than one million cups of Rita’s water ice to herald the new season, and draws long lines every year, even in cold weather.
Rita’s shops have opened for the season, but the company said it canceled this year’s event to avoid large gatherings that have the potential to spread COVID-19.
Rita’s canceled the 2020 giveaway as well because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Rita’s looks forward to celebrating the First Day of Spring in 2022 when it is safe to have traditional gatherings,” the company said.
