Rite Aid Store Closing

As of September 25, one of Rite Aid's five Toms River locations will close, a company representative announced on Wednesday.

The company announced the closure of the store at 1726 Route 37 East, at Cornell Avenue, close to the Salvation Army building.

The Wall Street Journal reported in August that Rite Aid was prepared to apply for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as a result of the impact of opioid lawsuits. According to Yahoo Finance, that filing was anticipated to include the closure of more than 400 of its 2,200 locations.

The closure, according to the Rite Aid spokeswoman, was the result of an ongoing examination of the company's operations.

"We review every neighborhood to ensure that our customers will have access to health services, be it at Rite Aid or a nearby pharmacy, and we work to seamlessly transfer their prescriptions so that there is no disruption of services," the spokesperson added. Additionally, wherever possible, "we try to transfer associates to other Rite Aid locations."

Prescriptions at the store are being transferred to the Fischer Boulevard location, according to Darryl Musto, the pharmacist at the Route 37 facility that is closing.
