School Zones See More Officers After Teen’s Tragic Death in Brick Township

According to Brick Township Police Department, in response to a recent tragic incident and in an effort to reinforce the importance of roadway safety, they are reminding all drivers to slow down and stay alert when traveling through school zones in Brick Township, New Jersey.

School zones are active, high-risk areas where children, parents, and crossing guards are present—often during busy morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times. Even a moment of distraction or driving above the posted speed limit can have devastating consequences.

Over the coming days and weeks, officers will be actively saturating school zones throughout the township. Increased enforcement will include strict attention to speed violations, distracted driving, and any behavior that puts pedestrians at risk. Tickets will be issued to drivers who fail to obey posted school zone regulations.

This is not just about enforcement—it is about prevention. Every driver has a responsibility to ensure that students get to and from school safely.

We ask all motorists to:
• Slow down and obey posted school zone speed limits
• Eliminate distractions while driving
• Be prepared to stop for crossing guards and pedestrians
• Allow extra travel time during school hours
One careless decision behind the wheel can change lives forever. Please drive like children’s lives depend on it—because they do.

In response to family concerns regarding chronic speeding along Lanes Mill Road following the tragic death of Brick Memorial freshman Jackson Mueller, Brick Township police started implementing modifications on Wednesday.

Less than a day after the Township Council meeting where parents pleaded for assistance, new pedestrian crossing signs had been installed.

On May 19, Jackson Mueller, 15, was struck on Lanes Mill Road while riding his bicycle through a crosswalk at Rhode Island Avenue on his way to Brick Memorial High School. The 17-year-old driver who struck him is accused of intentionally fleeing the scene of a fatal car accident.
