Officials revealed Tuesday that the Perlmutter family's seven ShopRite locations in Ocean County had been sold to the Saker family.

The rumor of the potential sale initially surfaced in October. The Saker family, who have been in the grocery industry for over 100 years, now owns 39 ShopRite locations across the state as a result of the sale of the Perlmutter stores.

The Fischer Bay store in Toms River, as well as the Manahawkin, Lacey, Manchester, Jackson, Bayville, and Waretown stores, are run under the Perlmart Inc. corporate name.

"We are proud to continue their traditions as we welcome their stores and associates into our family of supermarkets," said Richard Saker, president and CEO of Saker ShopRites Inc. "Perlmart has been dedicated to customer and community service since they first opened their doors, and we are proud to continue those traditions as we welcome their stores and associates into our family of supermarkets." "We think this is a perfect way to transmit the torch from one local, family-owned firm to another because both the Saker and Perlmutter families have a passion of the supermarket business."

Both family businesses were also early members of Wakefern Food Corp., a retailer-owned cooperative celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Joseph Saker, Richard Saker's father, joined the new cooperative in 1947, the same year that Michael Perlmutter's father, Julius Perlmutter, joined Wakefern and opened a store in downtown Toms River, according to the firm.

Hundreds of organizations, including the Ocean County College Foundation, local hospital foundations, first-aid squads, volunteer fire departments, food banks, and others, have benefited from the Perlmutter Family's generosity.

During the height of Hurricane Sandy, Perlmart businesses opened in support of the community, preparing and donating 50,000 meals to first-responders.

Richard Saker's great-grandfather founded a modest mom-and-pop shop in Freehold in 1916, and the Saker family has been in the grocery industry ever since. Richard's father, Joseph, eventually took over the family business, and today, Richard, along with his brothers and son, represent the Saker ShopRites' fourth and fifth generations.

Saker ShopRites owns and operates 32 ShopRite supermarkets, as well as 30 in-store pharmacies, two liquor stores, and the Holmdel-based Dearborn Market and Garden Center. More than 8,000 employees work for the corporation, which also supports over 1,300 charity groups.
