Before an extended heat wave through the rest of the week, a round of powerful thunderstorms in New Jersey on Monday afternoon and Monday evening may bring gusty gusts, flooding, and downpours. Temperatures are predicted to reach 90 degrees or higher across much of the state.
The National Weather Service warned that heavy rain might fall at any time between around 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. The meteorological service downgraded the likelihood of severe storms for the majority of northern counties shortly after 9 a.m. to "slight" chance.
The coming week will become increasingly hot as highs reach the low to mid-90s until at least Saturday. Tuesday and Wednesday are predicted to be dry, while Thursday could see showers and thunderstorms.
On Wednesday, a heat advisory is anticipated to be issued for the Interstate 95 corridor due to the likelihood that the heat index would be in the low 100s. Highs in the low to mid-90s are also anticipated for Friday and Saturday.
If the high temperature is 90 degrees or above for three days in a row, a heat wave has occurred.
