Potential for a Significant Snowstorm
Forecasters are following a probable nor'easter snowfall that could dump considerable amounts of snow on New Jersey this weekend or graze the coast on Friday night and Saturday.
According to the
National Weather Service, overnight updates showed the projected coastal storm sticking farther off shore, which could indicate a "less devastating" storm for New Jersey. But with the storm more than three days away, much uncertainty remains, the weather service says.
The path of the yet-to-form storm will determine the meteorological fate of the Garden State, as it always does. Subtle shifts closer to the Jersey Shore could make a big difference.
Forecasters with
AccuWeather.com believe the storm's chances of hitting New Jersey range from a complete miss (only chilly, windy conditions), to significant snow, or somewhere in between.
According to AccuWeather.com, "a 50-mile westward shift in the storm's path could mean... much of New Jersey... New York City and Philadelphia will receive heavy snow and gusty winds, potentially causing major travel disruptions."
"A track 50 miles to the east, on the other hand, could mean very little, if any, snow for the mid-Atlantic."
According to AccuWeather.com, the storm could develop into a "bomb cyclone," which occurs when barometric pressure drops rapidly in 24 hours and brings "ample" precipitation.
The National Weather Service and AccuWeather have yet to produce snowfall forecast maps for the storm this far out.
