In 2022, drivers on some major New Jersey highways will have to pay increased tolls.
Starting Saturday, January 1, 2022, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which operates the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike, will hike tolls by 3%.
Toll indexing, in which toll increases are based on an economic indicator and examined annually rather than once every 10 years or so, is now being used by the agency to decide rate hikes.
Passenger vehicle tolls at Parkway toll plazas will increase from $1.90 to $1.96 for E-ZPass customers and $2 for cash customers.
The average Turnpike toll for a passenger vehicle will increase from $4.80 to $4.95.
Officials with the Turnpike Authority say the toll hike is necessary to pay highway and bridge upgrades under the agency's $24 billion capital plan, which will take more than a decade to complete.
Starting Saturday, drivers using the Atlantic City Expressway will face a 3% toll hike.
Passenger vehicle tolls on five Jersey Shore bridges connecting beach towns in Cape May and Atlantic counties will increase from $1.50 to $2 on Feb. 1. The rate for other vehicles would rise in lockstep with the increase in the rate for other cars.
