Stranger Found Hiding in NJ Home After Asking to Use Bathroom

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — Police are warning residents to be cautious about allowing strangers into their homes after an unusual incident involving a man who was found hiding inside a Berkeley Heights residence.

According to the Berkeley Heights Police Department, officers were called to a home Saturday night at approximately 9:20 p.m. after a resident reported that an unknown man had been allowed inside after asking to use the bathroom.

Once inside the home, the man went into the bathroom, turned off the lights and attempted to hide from the homeowners and responding officers, police said.

Officers located the man and took appropriate action to safely resolve the situation. Police did not release the man's identity or provide additional information about what happened after he was found.

Following the incident, police reminded residents not to allow people they do not know into their homes.

Authorities advised residents who encounter an unfamiliar person asking for assistance to keep their doors locked and contact police if necessary.

Police also urged residents to report suspicious activity immediately. Anyone who feels unsafe or witnesses suspicious behavior should contact the Berkeley Heights Police Department. In an emergency, residents should call 911.
