According to Toms River Police an 18-year-old male from Maine was killed in the collapse of a hole he was digging with his 17-year-old sister on Chadwick beach on Tuesday evening.
The brother and sister spent the afternoon with their family at the beach, known as Ocean Beach 3, a private beach community near Chadwick Beach, authorities said.
At 4:09 p.m., Township police officers and emergency medical services personnel went to the beach near the Seaview Road entrance on the barrier island.
The hole was dug deep with Frisbees, according to Toms River Mayor Maurice "Mo" Hill Jr.
According to the Mayor, the girl was airlifted to Neptune's Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Emergency crews from the surrounding area pulled 18 year old, Levy Caverley, out of the sand about 6:45 p.m. who was pronounced dead.
The Toms River Police Department requested that the public avoid the beach.
This is not the first time that a beach in Monmouth and Ocean counties has collapsed. A youngster was rescued from a collapsed sand hole by Belmar police, lifeguards, rescuers, and firefighters in July 2020.
A 12-year-old boy was rescued from a collapsing hole at Surf City by lifeguards and witnesses in August 2015.
