Terrifying South Jersey Workplace Accident: Man Trapped Under Asphalt for 2½ Hours

A Mays Landing man was rescued Tuesday morning after becoming trapped beneath asphalt inside a storage bin for approximately two and a half hours, according to Egg Harbor Township Police.

Police said they received a call around 6 a.m. reporting that a man was stuck inside a recycled asphalt bin at AE Stone, located at 1435 Doughty Road. According to authorities, 26-year-old Cameron Briggs was inside the bin when he fell backward and became trapped beneath the asphalt.

Police said the asphalt shifted and partially collapsed onto Briggs’ lower body, trapping his legs beneath the material. Briggs remained stuck in a seated position, with the asphalt covering him just above the waist while his legs extended straight out.

Workers spent roughly 20 minutes trying to free Briggs before contacting emergency responders for help, according to police.

Authorities said Briggs was conscious and alert but could not move because of the heavy asphalt pressing down on him. He also faced the ongoing danger of several additional tons of asphalt collapsing around him.

After being trapped for approximately two and a half hours, Briggs was successfully rescued and transported to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and underwent further evaluation.
