After an attempted theft of an SUV went badly for the thief on Wednesday, Toms River police are reminding homeowners to lock their vehicles and take their key fobs with them.
According to
Toms River Police, suspects in a silver Audi (believed to be stolen from Clifton) attempted to steal a vehicle on Todd Road on Wednesday afternoon. The owner of the vehicle was inside at the time, which shocked the suspect, who then fled the scene. The same suspects made an attempt in Wall Twp shortly after.
According to Jillian Messina, a media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department, more than 700 vehicles were stolen in New Jersey in 2022. Thieves are on the lookout for automobiles that appear to be unlocked, as well as those with side mirrors that aren't folded against the vehicle's body, she said.
That appears to have been the case on Wednesday, when suspects in a silver Audi attempted to steal an SUV from a property on Todd Road shortly before 4 p.m., according to Messina.
The incident was captured on the homeowner's security camera video. The Audi pulls into the driveway of the residence, and a man jumps out and goes to an SUV parked nearby, which authorities suspect was stolen in Clifton.
When the burglar unlocks the SUV's door, he sees the driver still behind the wheel and dashes back to the Audi, which speeds away.
The same Audi, according to Messina, was seen at the scene of attempted vehicle thefts in Wall Township later Wednesday.
"The vehicle was most likely targeted since the mirrors were in an unlocked position," Messina added. "Please remember to lock your doors 24 hours a day, as auto thefts are on the rise in New Jersey."
