The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued swimming advisories Tuesday afternoon for 12 Jersey Shore ocean beaches after water testing revealed elevated levels of fecal bacteria.

These 12 Beaches Are:

1. Connecticut Avenue Beach, Atlantic City
2. Iowa Avenue, Atlantic City
3. Pennsylvania Avenue Beach, Atlantic City
4. Mississippi Avenue Beach, Atlantic City
5. Missouri Avenue Beach, Atlantic City
6. North Carolina Avenue Beach, Atlantic City
7. South Carolina Avenue Beach, Atlantic City
8. States Avenue, Atlantic City
9. Texas Avenue, Atlantic City
10. Virginia Avenue Beach, Atlantic City
11. Elberon Beach Club, Long Branch
12. Laird Street Beach, Long Branch

When a water sample, contains more than 104 colony-forming units of enterococci, the beach is placed under a swimming advisory. The water is then retested the following day.

Enterococci are bacteria used as an indicator of potential contamination in recreational waters, including contamination from human or animal waste.

The DEP said water samples from the affected beaches were collected again Tuesday, with the results expected to be released Wednesday afternoon.
