The officers immediately entered the water. A passing boater assisted them in reaching the victim, allowing the officers to lift the person out of the bay and begin CPR while still in the water. They then moved the victim to a nearby stretch of beach, where additional emergency crews took over lifesaving efforts.

The victim—whose identity has not been released—was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where they remain in critical condition, police said.

Emergency personnel from Lacey Township EMS, the Forked River Fire Department, and paramedics also responded to the scene.
