Toms River 12U All-Stars Battle for Third Place Sunday After Tough Saturday Loss

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The Toms River Little League Softball All-Stars saw their championship hopes come to an end Saturday after a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Kentucky in the Orange Bracket championship game.

Toms River jumped out to an early lead, but Kentucky rallied to secure the narrow victory and advance.

With the loss, Toms River will now compete for third place on Sunday at 10 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, with Toms River facing the loser of Saturday night’s matchup between North Carolina and Florida.

Toms River once again turned in a solid defensive performance, with Jaelyn Brown leading the way in the circle. Brown recorded three strikeouts and issued one walk while giving up eight hits.

Brown also provided Toms River’s only RBI of the game as the team had difficulty finding its rhythm at the plate against Kentucky pitcher Michaela Knight. Knight kept the Mid-Atlantic Region champions in check, limiting them to five hits while striking out six batters.

Kentucky came up with several key defensive plays throughout the game to stop Toms River’s scoring opportunities. One of the biggest came in the second inning, when Kentucky’s center fielder threw out a Toms River runner at home plate, preventing what would have been a 2-0 advantage.

Toms River opened the game with a strong defensive stand. After Kentucky’s first two batters reached base, Franki Velardi made a big play at shortstop, fielding a ground ball and quickly getting to second base to record the second out. Brown then ended the inning with a strikeout.

Toms River grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Aviana Gay reached on a single and advanced to second on an error before scoring when Brown drove the first pitch she saw into the gap in left-center field. Briella Bognar followed with a double on a 2-2 pitch, but Toms River was unable to add to its lead.

Kentucky opened the second inning with a single, but Leiana Gay quickly erased the baserunner by throwing her out at second on a stolen-base attempt, with Velardi applying the tag. Brown struck out the next batter before inducing a groundout to Gia Gatto to end the inning.

Toms River nearly extended its lead in the bottom half. Velardi reached when her ground ball struck the first-base bag and bounced back toward the pitcher. She advanced to second on a passed ball before Leiana Gay lined a single into shallow center. Velardi attempted to score, but Kentucky’s center fielder delivered a strong throw to the plate, where the catcher applied the tag for the final out of the inning.

Toms River continued to make plays defensively in the third. Analeise Curley fielded a ground ball at third and threw out Kentucky’s leadoff batter. Gatto recorded the second out before Brown struck out another batter to complete the inning. Toms River was retired in order in the bottom of the third.

Kentucky tied the game in the fourth inning. Carly Leonard made a running catch on a deep fly ball to left for the first out, while Brown fielded a grounder and threw to first for the second. Kentucky then put a runner on with a single to right, followed by a double to the wall in left-center that brought the tying run home. Curley kept the inning from getting worse by making a sharp grab on a line drive at third to end the threat.

In the bottom of the fourth, Aviana Gay drew a walk before Brown advanced her to second on a fielder’s choice. Bognar then singled, sending Gay to third. Bognar attempted to advance to second but was ruled out following a replay review after her foot came off the bag as Kentucky’s shortstop applied the tag. Knight then caught a fly ball to end the inning.

Kentucky took the lead in the fifth. Curley made another impressive defensive play, catching a line drive at third for the first out. Knight followed with a double to center, but Velardi kept Kentucky from adding another baserunner by stopping a ground ball that appeared headed into center field.

Kentucky then executed a sacrifice bunt to move runners to second and third. A single to right brought home the go-ahead run, giving Kentucky a 2-1 lead. Leonard recorded the final out of the inning with a fly-ball catch.

Toms River tried to answer in the bottom of the fifth when Sophia Tolentino drew a two-out walk, but the team could not bring her home.

Kentucky threatened again in the sixth, but Toms River’s defense came through. Mischa Koeppen made a sliding catch for the first out, followed by Gatto grabbing a looping line drive at second for the second. Kentucky later put a runner in scoring position with a double, but Brown ended the inning by fielding a pop-up.

With Toms River needing a run to extend the game, Knight retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth, securing Kentucky’s 2-1 victory and ending Toms River’s championship hopes.
