The recognition continues what district officials described as a standout year for Toms River students participating in the Veterans Day essay competition. Students representing the district’s three high schools also swept first, second, and third place honors in their division of the contest.
“We are so proud to announce that Sophia not only won the Intermediate South contest, but also was the 1st-place winner for the entire township in the intermediate school division,” said Intermediate South Supervisor of Instruction Dr. Kelly Kirk.
Intermediate South had a strong showing throughout the competition, with several students advancing to the township-wide finals. Finalists included Luke Polhemus, Brekyn Schweiger, Harper Delahunt, and Isaac Serrano, all of whom were recognized for their efforts in writing about veterans who have made a meaningful impact on their lives.
The school also honored its semifinalists, including Lilliana Shevlino, Anjali Sacramento Aguilar, Carter Nelson, Kendall Royer, and Gabriella Donato. Each student received a certificate, a pizza from Papa John’s, and a coveted free homework pass in recognition of their achievement.
“Congratulations to all for your hard work and well-written essays that described the impact that a veteran has had on your life,” Kirk said.
