According to Toms River Police Department, several police and fire units were sent to Edgewood Drive on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at around 11:20 PM in response to a suspected apartment building fire. When they arrived, numerous individuals were already outside and pounding on doors to help evacuate the structure.
Officers were greeted by neighbors Jordan Finkle and Dominic Dowd, who said they had just helped a woman escape from a burning apartment. The woman had told them there was another person inside, even though they had not seen or heard them. Officer Tyler Pinto attempted to locate the allegedly imprisoned person by scaling the apartment's balcony, but he was unable to see or hear anyone inside.
Police and Fire units immediately responded and observed fire venting out of a second floor window of building number 6. The occupant of the apartment was heard screaming by neighbors who were able to climb to the second floor balcony where she was located and handed her down to other residents of the complex.
The female occupant was transported to
Community Medical Center and was listed in critical but stable condition and is being treated for severe smoke inhalation.
To treat the female victim's smoke inhalation, she was transported to Community Medical Center. Firefighters and first responders repeatedly searched the apartment after the fire was put out, but they found no indication of anyone else inside. The fire caused damage to numerous apartments that were ruled uninhabitable. The American Red Cross was alerted and sent a team to the area to assist the residents.
The
Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention, the Toms River Police Detective Bureau, and the
Ocean County Prosecutor's Office are still looking into the fire's origins. The CIU of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department, numerous fire departments, and CSO/EMTs all provided assistance on the scene.
