Toms River Teen Impaled By Javelin

Pine Beach Teen Hospitalized

A Pine Beach teenager was hospitalized Tuesday after he was impaled during a track-and-field javelin throw at the field outside Donovan Catholic High School in Toms River.

According to Jillian Messina, a spokeswoman with the Toms River Police Department, officers were directed to an open field near the track-and-field training area where they found an injured 16-year-old boy.

The teen, who is from Pine Beach, had suffered an injury from a “javelin impaled in his right thigh,” Messina said in an email.

“The javelin was impaled several inches into his thigh; however, there was no visible bleeding, and the victim was conscious and having a conversation with first-responders,” according to Messina.

Firefighters from Toms River cut the javelin “to allow for the safe transport to the hospital,” Messina said. It was not immediately clear if the victim is a student at the school or whether he had been participating in an athletic event.

The teenager was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where he remained on Wednesday. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known, Messina said.
