Triple Threat: High Temperatures, Smoky Air, and Storms Ahead

New Jersey is bracing for a dangerous mix of weather hazards on Wednesday as temperatures climb toward the triple digits. Highs could reach or exceed 100 degrees in some areas, with oppressive humidity pushing heat index values between 105 and 108 degrees.

Adding to the concerns, isolated thunderstorms may develop during the late afternoon and evening hours, bringing the potential for gusty winds, heavy rain, and localized impacts.

Air quality could also become a problem as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifts south into the region. Forecasters warned that some of the smoke may reach ground level, similar to conditions experienced across New Jersey during the summer of 2023. Wednesday is expected to be the peak of the latest heat wave, bringing the most dangerous combination of extreme heat and humidity.
Forecasters predict that temperatures across much of New Jersey will soar into the mid-90s, with some locations approaching 98 or 99 degrees and a few spots potentially reaching above 100 degrees.

The heat will feel even more intense due to high humidity levels, creating a dangerously hot and uncomfortable combination with oppressive, sticky conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat warnings for much of central and southern New Jersey, including areas along and southeast of Interstate 95, as dangerous heat conditions move into the region. The warnings will remain in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A heat advisory is also in place for the rest of the state during the same timeframe, including counties across northern New Jersey, as high temperatures and oppressive humidity create potentially hazardous conditions.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires could slightly reduce temperatures by blocking some sunlight, but forecasters warn that conditions will remain dangerously hot for anyone spending long periods outdoors.

A light west wind of 10 to 15 mph is expected to prevent the cooler sea breeze from moving inland, allowing extreme heat to spread across the Jersey Shore. Coastal areas could see temperatures climb into the mid- to upper 90s, with heat index values reaching around 100 to 105 degrees on Wednesday. Check the latest forecast.
