Acting Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck and New Jersey State Police Superintendent Colonel Patrick J. Callahan today announced the arrest of two juveniles from Ocean County for the alleged arson on the Garden State Parkway that shut down the northbound and southbound lanes for approximately 10 hours.
State Police troopers responded to a report of a fire near milepost 91 in Brick Township on Wednesday, January 19, at around 5:00 p.m. During the investigation, police discovered that the fire began in a drainage culvert beneath the Garden State Parkway, which runs from the 91 north entry ramp to the 91 south exit ramp.

The two youths were identified as the suspects who allegedly sparked the fire through various investigation methods. Detectives learned that the minors recently burglarized a structure operated by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority adjacent to the Garden State Parkway 91 north commuter lot as a result of their investigation.
Arson, burglary, criminal mischief, interference with transportation, and defiant trespassing were all charges against the two teenagers on January 25. They were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
The investigation was assisted by the Brick Township Police Department, and the case is being prosecuted by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
While most juvenile cases are kept private, the New Jersey State Police are disclosing the following information today in response to public interest in the alleged crime.
Due to the strong confidentiality requirements of juvenile proceedings and records, no additional information about the investigation or juvenile complaints will be shared at this time. Similarly, Family Court procedures involving minors are closed to the public, and the minors' identities are kept private.
Charges are only accusations, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
