Two Toms River Men Arrested for Shoplifting

Additional Charges are also Pending

On Thursday, September 9th, 2021, at approximately 4:00 PM, the Stafford Township Police Department’s Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) was conducting surveillance on two known serial shoplifters and were apprehended in Stafford Township. Stafford Township police said two men from Toms River were detained in connection with a number of shoplifting crimes throughout Ocean and Monmouth Counties.

According to the Stafford Township Drug Enforcement Unit, Ronald Schimbauer, 50, and Ronald Eckert, 48, of South Toms River, were arrested Thursday for shoplifting products from Kohl's and Target.

Following a tip about two guys shoplifting from Home Depot locations in Ocean and Monmouth counties, Stafford police began surveillance after seeing two people in a black Kia Soul who closely matched their descriptions.

Schimbauer fled as investigators tried to arrest him as he walked out of the Target store, authorities said. An arrest was made following a short chase.

In his Kia, Eckert tried to flee, but was detained on Route 72 near Stafford Park Boulevard, according to police.

As reported by the police, the stolen articles were valued at more than $2,000.

Schimbauer was charged with several charges of shoplifting, criminal attempt to shoplift, and resisting arrest, according to police. He is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail, officials said. Additional charges are expected to be brought against him.

Crack/cocaine possession, possession of CDS paraphernalia, and three charges of conspiracy to commit shoplifting were charged against Eckert. Other summonses were issued, including one for driving while suspended, one for driving with CDS in the vehicle, and several others for driving while suspended.
