Two Critical After Late-Night Barnegat Bay Water Rescue in Seaside Heights
SEASIDE HEIGHTS — Two people remained in critical condition Friday morning, Aug. 7, following a water rescue in Barnegat Bay Thursday night, officials said.
The victims, a man and a woman, were rescued after police responded to a report of an unconscious man on
Sunset Beach. Seaside Heights Fire Chief Tim Farrell said a good Samaritan had apparently pulled the man from the bay before officers arrived.
The call came in around 8:05 p.m. Thursday. When police reached the scene, the man was conscious at times and was able to tell officers that another person was still underwater roughly 30 feet offshore near the boat launch.
The Seaside Heights Fire Department's water rescue team launched an extensive search and located the submerged woman about 20 minutes after the initial emergency call. Rescuers immediately began performing CPR, Farrell said.
The victims' ages and hometowns were not immediately available.
