The National Weather Service reported that a waterspout appeared off the coast of southern Monmouth County on Thursday.
According to the NWS's preliminary storm report from August 24, it was spotted near Asbury Park just before noon.NBC Philadelphia meteorologist Justin Godynick posted images of the waterspout from Ocean Grove and Spring Lake on Twitter.

According to the NWS, waterspouts are tornadoes that occur over water. They are similar to land tornadoes in their traits.
