According to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, a Toms River woman is charged of impersonating a doctor and treating patients and writing prescriptions for drugs while using the legitimate medical license of a cousin.
July 25, 2023, Maria F. Macburnie, sometimes known as Marife L. Jed Macburnie, 62, of Toms River, was charged with three charges of distribution of a controlled dangerous substance, forgery, practicing medicine without a license, and health care claims fraud.
The charges are the outcome of an investigation by the DEA New Jersey Division-Camden Resident Office and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Economic Crime Squad.
According to the investigation, Macburnie saw and treated patients between March 2022 and June 2023 while impersonating as a qualified medical professional and working out of Shore Medical Associates in Toms River, situated at 601 Route 37 West, Suite 101.
During this time frame, Macburnie was prescribing medications, including controlled dangerous substances, to patients.
Further investigation revealed that Macburnie submitted several insurance claims and bills for services given during times when Dr. Almazon-Condit was unable to visit and treat patients, as well as multiple prescriptions written under the name of Dr. Almazon-Condit.
On July 26, 2023, Macburnie was peacefully brought into custody by agents from the DEA New Jersey Division-Camden Resident Office and detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Economic Crime Squad. at anticipation of a detention hearing, she is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail.
